With all the work we have going on, I find myself literally working 60 hours per week or more. This counts the time I spend in the office, the time at home working on projects, and the time I spend, well writing in my blog/twitter/facebook/linkedin/plaxo accounts because after all, this is still work related. :-) Particularly at home because we’re just so connected here with the laptop and wi-fi that I naturally just jump back into a work mode when I’m home. Seems any spare time I have, I just gravitate back to the laptop.

Well, I was reminded by my wife that sometimes you just have to slow down and put work far, FAR away. We just got back from a 10 day Panama Canal cruise where my only connection to the outside world was my iPhone and 150 minutes of WiFi time through the ship’s Internet Café. After 10 days I still had almost 1 hour of time left. We literally spent 5 of those days doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I didn’t think it was possible for me to simply sit in a lounge chair by a pool from 10am till 6pm, but for 5 full days, that’s pretty much all we did. And it was wonderful.

So my friends, it might be very VERY difficult to walk away from your work, but please just slow down once in a while and enjoy your life. We only get one shot at this and while we all need to earn a living and make money, we don’t need to do it every single second of every single day. So put down the laptop, blackberry, palm, iPhone for a week and just get away. It’ll do your life good.

Besides, you just never know who you might run into when you get away from the office…..
